What are the TIAA and TIAC?

If you’ve never heard of the Thermal Insulation Association of Alberta or (TIAA), you’re not alone. This organization was first founded in 1962, and it represents and is made up of Albertan insulation contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers. The association serves to provide a space for talking about matters affecting the insulation industry, educate new comers in the industry, and promote a culture of excellence. The TIAA was formed and grew in conjunction with Thermal Insulation Associations in other provinces and also the TIAC.

What is the TIAC?

The Thermal Insulation Association of Canada is similar to the TIAA, but operates on a federal level. It is responsible for creating best practice guidelines for all of Canada. This is important because across the provinces, there is often a lot of discrepancy in the information and publications offered by different contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, etc. The consistent guidelines provided by TIAC allow everyone involved in the insulation industry — regardless of their home province or territory, to be on the same page.

What Does this Mean for You?

Fortunately for Canadian project owners, TIAC makes its guidelines available online for everyone. This means you have an opportunity to make sure you’re knowledgeable on the Canadian standards for insulation, so you can make informed decisions when speaking with your insulation or firestopping team. It’s worth noting that the TIAC guidelines were not created to override provincial standards. After all, Canada is a huge country with a range of climates. Industries in BC and Nunavut are going to have very different insulation needs than in Alberta. However, the guide does offer a good starting point for basic knowledge and a conversation with your insulation or firestopping team.

Here at Westcal Insulation, we believe in prevention and being proactive in industry. Adequate insulation and firestopping help to save lives and money. We feel that project owners who are informed about the benefits of insulation and who are aware of the guidelines will be better equipped to handle problems and work with their insulation team.
