Here at WestCal Insulation, we offer a wide variety of insulation options. We do this because every structure has unique needs. One of these products is something called “silica aerogel”. While that might be a mouthful to try to pronounce, it’s actually a really cool material.
What Exactly Is It:
Although its name suggests a gel-like consistency, silica aerogel is actually a solid. The gel in the term refers to how it is prepared. The end result is a polymer foam that has a porous, sponge-like structure. Nearly 99% of its volume is air, making it the lightest and lowest-density material known to humankind. In appearance, silica aerogel looks like a cloud you can hold in your hand, but feels like styrofoam. The creation of this amazing material wasn’t the product of a hard-lined scientific study, but was actually the result of a bet between two scientists, proving that a little friendly competition can sometimes be a really good thing.
Out of this World:
Aside from holding fifteen entries in the “Guinness Book of Records”, silica aerogel has some pretty incredible applications. For instance, when NASA discovered the cloud-like material, they realized that it could be a tool for their own exploration. After extensive research, NASA now uses silica aerogel to insulate electronics on the Mars rover. How cool is that?
Down to Earth:
Turns out that NASA was on to something. Aerogels are natural thermal insulators that combat conduction and convection, two methods of heat transfer. Their airy composition and lattice-like structure make it difficult for heat to penetrate through. Because of these properties, silica aerogel can save big money when used as insulation. This is because a space that is better insulated will require less energy to heat or cool. Using less energy is more gentle on the environment and softer on your pocketbook.
Over the years, silica aerogels have gotten more accolades than actor Sir Ian McKellen, and no wonder. For those who want the absolute best in insulation, silica aerogel is your number one. If you want to know more about insulation options, give us a call today!
