Types of Mechanical Systems That Benefit Most from Insulation

In previous articles we’ve discussed how insulation impacts your bottom line. For this week we want to explore a little deeper and take a look at the types of mechanical systems that benefit the most from proper insulation.

 

Pipes

Depending on the exterior environment and interior contents, there are many problems that can occur in and around a pipe without the proper insulation. 

 

  • Condensation. Moisture that is allowed to rest on a pipe’s metal surface can lead to corrosion or rust. Over time this damage will compromise the integrity of the pipe. Insulation can act as a barrier to prevent the condensation from forming in the first place.
  • Temperature Changes. In cases where the pipe’s contents are significantly hotter or colder than the ambient temperature around the pipe, there will naturally be considerable heat loss or gain. Your systems will have to work harder to keep the pipe’s contents at the intended temperature. Layered insulation significantly limits thermal exchange between the pipe and the air around it.
  • Safety Concerns. Insulation doesn’t just protect your pipes. Extremely hot or cold pipes can burn workers who inadvertently come into contact with them. Use insulation to keep your people at a safe distance from any potentially dangerous components. 

 

HVAC Ducts

Industry cannot stand still during our freezing winters or sweltering summers. Because of this, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are integral to nearly every single facility in Alberta. Proper insulation makes these systems more efficient and effective than they could ever be on their own. 

    • Managing Temperature.  The main function of any HVAC system is to control temperature. This doesn’t do much good if the air within the ducts gets hotter or cooler as it travels. Insulation wrap ensures that the air pumping out of the furnace, boiler, or AC unit is getting to its destination at the intended temperature.
    • Noise Control. HVAC systems are not always as quiet as we would like them to be. Fans, airflow, and reverberations through the ductwork can cause irritating and constant noise. Luckily, an added benefit of insulation is its acoustical dampening properties.
    • Moisture Reduction. In much the same way as pipes, ducts are highly susceptible to damage caused by condensation due to shifting temperatures. Condensation can also cause moisture buildup behind walls and above ceilings, creating the perfect environment for structural damage and mold.

 

Boilers

Steam and fire tube boilers are essential to many industrial facilities. These high temperature units require specialized insulation to ensure their safety and efficacy.

 

  • Radiant Heat Loss. Boilers work by utilizing extremely high temperatures, any loss in heat can impact its ability to function properly. When this happens, the boiler will require more fuel than is necessary. Insulation works alongside the casing to stop the transfer of radiant heat.

 

  • Safety Concerns. While not all pipes create a high temperature safety hazard, all boilers do. The surface of a boiler can reach hundreds of degrees Fahrenheit, posing a major burn risk even to workers with appropriate PPE. Eliminate this risk by insulating the outside of the unit properly.
